A printed product makes an impression long before anyone starts reading it. The first thing people notice is how it feels in their hands. A catalogue that bends too easily can make a premium brand seem ordinary, while an overly rigid flyer may increase production costs without adding real value. In many commercial print projects, paper selection has as much influence on the final result as the design itself.

One specification plays a central role in that decision: GSM. Understanding what it represents helps businesses choose materials that suit both their objectives and their budget.

Looking Beyond the Number

In print production, paper is commonly classified by GSM (grams per square metre). The figure indicates how much a sheet would weigh if it covered exactly one square metre, allowing different paper stocks to be compared using a consistent standard.

However, GSM should not be treated as a direct indicator of quality. Papers with identical weights may differ noticeably in stiffness, opacity and surface feel because fibres, coatings and manufacturing methods all influence the finished material.

For this reason, professional printers assess GSM together with the paper's physical characteristics rather than relying on the number alone.

Why the Right Weight Makes a Difference

Selecting paper is rarely about choosing the thickest stock available. Every increase in weight affects several stages of production, from printing and folding to shipping and storage.

Lighter materials are often preferred for high-volume promotional campaigns where distribution costs matter. Heavier stocks, by contrast, help create a stronger tactile impression and withstand repeated handling, making them suitable for products expected to last.

Successful print planning usually balances four considerations:

  • the image a business wants to project;
  • how frequently the product will be handled;
  • the finishing techniques involved;
  • overall production costs.

Evaluating these factors together leads to a more practical decision than focusing on GSM in isolation.

Common Paper Weights Across Print Products

Although every project has unique requirements, several weight ranges are widely used throughout commercial printing.

Paper between 80 and 100 GSM is typically chosen for everyday office documents, manuals and letterheads where flexibility and economical printing are priorities.

Stocks ranging from 115 to 170 GSM are well suited to flyers, folded leaflets and promotional inserts that need better durability while remaining lightweight.

For brochures, presentation folders and restaurant menus, 170 to 250 GSM often provides the right balance between rigidity and ease of folding.

Business cards, premium postcards, invitations and many luxury packaging components commonly use 300 to 400 GSM, delivering a more substantial feel and improved resistance to wear.

These figures should be viewed as practical reference points rather than fixed rules. The most suitable paper always depends on the complete specification of the project.

Paper Choice Doesn't End with GSM

Paper weight becomes even more important once finishing processes are considered.

A brochure with multiple folds, for example, may require scoring if produced on heavier stock to achieve clean fold lines. Laminating, embossing, foil stamping or applying spot UV coating can also influence which paper performs best throughout production.

Instead of treating paper selection as a separate decision, experienced production teams consider printing, finishing and material compatibility as one integrated process.

A Common Assumption That Doesn't Hold Up

Many buyers assume that increasing GSM automatically increases quality. In reality, the relationship is far less straightforward.

An elegant corporate report may benefit from a heavier cover combined with lighter inside pages, creating a premium appearance without unnecessary expense. A promotional leaflet designed for mass distribution often performs exactly as intended on a much lighter stock.

Effective print specifications are built around purpose, not maximum weight.

Choosing Paper with Confidence

Paper weight affects much more than the physical thickness of a printed product. It influences how a brand is perceived, how comfortably a product can be handled, how efficiently it can be manufactured and how much the entire project ultimately costs.

Rather than selecting paper solely by GSM, it is more effective to consider the intended use, finishing requirements, expected lifespan and budget at the same time. When these elements are planned together, businesses achieve printed materials that not only look impressive but also perform exactly as required.
